England Coach: Roy Hodgson

England Manager Roy Hodgson

Harry Redknapp was a shoe-in for the England job according to the fans, the media and even the bookies....so let's all welcome Roy Hodgson! It's certainly a surprise move by the FA as Hodgson was not the popular choice but could this actually work in his and England's favour?

Hodgson is afforded great respect amongst players and managers alike and let's be honest, what's he got to lose? If England get knocked out then it was expected, if they win Euro 2012 he becomes a National Hero up there with Winston Churchill! Whichever way England fans view Hodgson's appointment he could take England to a major finals for once not having the media expecting them to win before a ball is kicked. The wily Hodgson with his underdog, defensive, siege mentality style could be the man to lead England to glory under the radar!

In his favour, Uncle Wroy certainly has the experience at both club and international level to make an impact with England. He has managed 16 different teams in 8 countries and guided the Swiss national team to the last 16 of the 1994 World Cup as well as qualification for Euro 1996. In a coaching career spanning 34 years, he's led the likes of Inter, Udinese, Blackburn, FC Copenhagen, Fulham and West Brom. However, it's perhaps his brief time yet unsuccessful time at Liverpool in 2010/2011 that unfairly sticks in the recent memory of England fans.

Roy Hodgson may not be the inspirational man-manager in the mould of Harry Redknapp but he is a top coach and he will lead England with a safe pair of hands at Euro 2012. The BIG question is - will that be enough?

England Squad for Euro 2012

PROBABLE - Named 16th May 2012

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich), Rob Green (West Ham).

Defenders: Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Leighton Baines (Everton), John Terry (Chelsea), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Gary Cahill (Chelsea).

Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Steven Gerrard (C) (Liverpool), Scott Parker (Tottenham), Ashley Young (Manchester United), James Milner (Man City), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal)

Forwards: Jermaine Defoe (Tottenham), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United).

England - Euro 2012 Qualifying:

During qualifying England were in Group G against Wales, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Montenegro. As is typically England, qualification went down to the final game where they only needed a draw to progress to the Euro 2012 finals. An incident packed and tense 2-2 draw away at Montenegro was enough to see England qualify top of the group. However, this came at the expense of Wayne Rooney who was needlessly sent off for kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic and he will miss England's first two Euro 2012 group matches.

England - Past European Championship Performances:

Well after missing out on Euro 2008 (ED: remember the wally with the brolly!) it's nice to see England back at the European Championship Finals! However, the history books don't make particularly pleasant reading for England fans!

England have never won the European Championship or even reached the final match. The closest England have come at the Euro's is the Semi-Final Stage in 1968, fresh of the back of winning the 1966 World Cup with a great team. The Semi-Final hurdle blocked England again at Euro 1996 and it was typically the Germans and another penalty shootout failure that ended the hopes of a nation! If only Gazza's big toe had been one inch longer or Gareth Southgate wasn't chosen to take a penalty the story could have been so different!

Despite the agony against Germany, England fans still fondly remember Euro 1996. A Terry Venables England team that was inspired by Gazza against Scotland and Shearer & Sheringham both on top of their game in the 4-1 thumping of Holland...it was so nearly a perfect summer!

It's widely accepted that England have the players to win Euro 2012 and if Roy Hodgson can get them playing then - a nation will expect! However, history and expectation does seem to way heavy on England's shoulders and after the performances at World Cup 2010 England could struggle once again at Euro 2012.

England Recent European Championships Performances:

  • Euro 1996 - Eliminated In Semi Finals
  • Euro 2000 - Eliminated Third In Group
  • Euro 2004 - Eliminated In Quarter Finals
  • Euro 2008 - Did Not Qualify

England - Player to Watch - Theo Walcott

England Theo Walcott

With the absence of England's talisman Wayne Rooney for the first two matches of Euro 2012 our player to watch is young Theo Walcott. The 23 year old Walcott is a highly talented attacker who plays his club football for Arsenal. He is known for his exceptional speed, quick movement, attacking runs down either wing or playing upfront as a striker. During 2011/2012, Theo Walcott has arguably enjoyed his most consistent season at Arsenal with his obvious natural ability being turned into several goals and assists. We fully expect him to take his club form to Euro 2012 and make a big impact for England!

Walcott was a product of the Southampton youth academy and he has impressed from an early age. He made his first team debut for Southampton in 2005 and he quickly caught the eye of Arsene Wenger in 2006 who snapped him up for Arsenal in a deal that could rise to £12 million! 2006 also saw Walcott break into the England national team at the tender age of 17 where he was surprisingly chosen as part of the England World Cup 2006 squad. He made his England debut in 2008 against Andorra and in his next game he scored a hat-trick against Croatia! To date, he has represented England 22 times and many more caps await him.

In terms of England chances at Euro 2012 we think a lot will depend on the form of Theo Walcott. He can play several attacking positions, both score and create and if his confidence is up he could be the man to fire in the goals that England will need to progress. As we mention in our England prediction below, at 66/1 Theo Walcott could be well worth a look in the Golden Boot Top Goalscorer market.

Theo Walcott Quotes: Former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola has said of Walcott's pace "You would need a pistol to stop him!" Lionel Messi has also been quoted with "Walcott is one of the most dangerous players I have ever played against."

Theo Walcott is also a regular on Twitter and you can follow him right here - Theo Walcott Twitter

England - Our Prediction

Another major tournament for England, so does another failure await or can England finally deliver when it really matters? As always, at the start of the tournament a nation will expect, the media will ramp everyone up to fever pitch but do the Three Lions really have what it takes to win Euro 2012?

Depending on which camp you sit in, Fabio Capello's shock resignation as England Manager in February 2012 is hardly ideal preparation but could it prove a blessing in disguise for England? Capello may have successfully guided England to Euro 2012 but it was a steady if not underwhelming qualification.

Somewhat surprisingly the English FA selected Roy Hodgson over fans favourite Harry Redknapp to take the hot-seat for Euro 2012. Is Uncle Wroy (as he's affectionately known) the man to get the finally get the best out of England? Either way, let's look to the positives, England are at least at the Euro Finals this time! The heartache of missing out on Euro 2008 and then the disaster that was World Cup 2010 remain fresh in the memory for England fans. As always, at the start of the tournament we'll all be optimistic that Euro 2012 will be our turn after 40+ years of hurt!

At Euro 2012, England have been drawn in Group D where they will face France, Sweden and the co-hosts Ukraine. On paper it looks a "winnable" group with France being the only obvious contenders. England play France in their first game and the result of this match should determine who finishes 1st and 2nd in Group D. We are predicting France will nick top spot over England but that both will qualify for the Quarter Finals. If this prediction is correct then it's surely going to be Spain v England in the Quarter Finals which will likely be the end of England's participation. For punters, this is what makes England's opening group game against France so important. England need to get a good result against Les Bleus to give themselves a real chance of topping Group D and having an easier path in the knockout stages.

The bookies have England best price around 10/1 to win Euro 2012 which based on past performances is not particularly generous so we'll be skipping a WIN bet on England for Euro 2012. The absence of Wayne Rooney for the first 2 games is a massive blow but the door opens for the likes of Theo Walcott, he's in-form, scoring goals for Arsenal and could be worth a squeak each-way at 66/1 in the Golden Boot market. So that leaves us with match betting (both pre-game & in-play) on England and perhaps a stage of elimination bet at the Quarter Finals?

As fans, the beteuro2012.com team are fully behind England and we'll have everything crossed they can do it but as a betting proposition we think England are best kept to small stakes during Euro 2012!
