Poland - Player to Watch - Wojciech Szczesny
Our player to watch for Poland during Euro 2012 is the Arsenal Goalkeeper and Number 1 Wojciech Szczesny. At just 20 years of age, Szczesny made his breakthrough season in 2010/2011 with Arsenal where he went from 4th choice goalkeeper to Number 1 ahead of Manuel Almunia, his Polish compatriot and rival Lukasz Fabianski and Vito Mannone. Despite his relative youth for a goalkeeper he has been praised for his maturity, composure, agility, handling and command of his penalty area.
As Poland's number 1, Szczesny follows in some very famous footsteps including the likes of Lev Yashin, Jerzy Dudek and Jan Tomaszewski. He also faces a fight to keep hold of his jersey with Lukasz Fabianski and Tomasz Kuszczak waiting in the wings, why do Poland generate some many great keepers?
With odds around 66/1 for Poland to win Euro 2012 Szczesny is expected to have his hands busy during the tournament. However, we like the look of the young Arsenal stopper and this is his opportunity on home soil to showcase his skills on the international stage!
Like his Arsenal teammate Jack Wilshere, Szczesny is a regular on Twitter. Follow him right here - Wojciech Szczesny Twitter
Let's take a look back at Jerzy Dudek's finest hour (and arguably Liverpool FC's) - from THAT night in Istanbul!
Poland - Our Prediction
Despite home advantage Poland are expected to struggle and if they manage to qualify from Group A then that will be classed as a successful tournament. The co-hosts Poland have been handed a tough looking assignment in Group A with Greece, Russia and the Czech Republic standing in their way. Poland will kick-off Euro 2012 against Greece in Warsaw on 8th June 2012.
From a betting perspective it looks likely Russia will progress into the Quarter Finals as Group Winners with Poland, Greece and the Czech Republic scrapping it out for 2nd place. Home advantage for Poland could be massive but we're going for Greece (unbeaten in qualifying) to progress alongside Russia from Group A!
Our Euro 2012 bets on Poland will be limited to match betting only.
